Jewel Vine and Knee Osteroarthritis
"Knee osteroarthritis" is a very common disease in the elderly which affects more than 6 million senior Thai citizens. Its prevalence is as high as 40 percent among people over 50 years of age and has an upward trend thereafter. The main symptom is knee pain which may impede normal everyday functions.
One of the therapies for knee osteroarthritis is the thigh muscle exercise. Patients usually receive painkillers, most frequently NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), which have important side effects of gastrointestinal irritation and ulceration and are expensive.
The Thai Department of Medical Sciences, through the Institute of Herbal Research, has conducted researches into the herb "jewel vine" as an alternative to imported drugs. The results showed good effectiveness. Jewel vine stem extract was found to exert analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties, and has been clinically proven in humans for to be an efficacious substitute for a conventional anti-inflammatory medication.
At the same time, the safety of jewel vine extract was tested for its safety by the Institute of Herbal Research, Department of Medical Sciences. The
animal studies on its acute and chronic toxicity found that it is highly safe. Moreover, its medicinal properties have been tested for in knee osteroarthritis patients from Siriraj Hospital. The volunteers took either jewel vine extract or naproxen (an NSAID). Jewel vine extract was demonstrated to have good efficacy in the treatment of knee osteroarthritis and a tendency toward greater safety than naproxen, which produced frequent hunger, abdominal pain, and dyspepsia in some patients whereas jewel vine extract did not (Reference 3) .
